| Sumario: | Abstract: Currently, Argentine universities have the faculty to issue degrees enabling the practice of law. This regulation differs from that adopted in other countries, where the practice of law is subject to post-graduate approval, usually consisting of exams and training. This paper compares both alternatives and concludes that, given the social implications of the legal profession, it would be appropriate, also in our country, to make its qualification subject to further controls than the university degree. The argument is developed in six sections. To begin with, an account of the existing regulations abroad is given. Secondly, the current state of the law career is explored, starting with the case of the University of Buenos Aires; its scarce practical training is highlighted. Thirdly, university autonomy is ruled out as a valid reason to prevent the existence of post university exams that enable access to practice law. Then, the benefits of regulating professional qualification are explained. Two objections to this possibility, linked to its economic costs and its usefulness, are then rejected. Finally, ways in which professional qualification could be regulated in our country are suggested. |
