Sumario:Most of the world's rivers show an increase in the deterioration in their water quality and quantity. The aim of this work is to highlight the relevance of the hydrological regime for the sustainable functioning of rivers and river systems, which maintain biodiversity and provide ecosystem services essential for humanity. Hydrological alterations, such as those due to many dams, have ecological and social effects. The practice of establishing minimum river flows is clearly insufficient to overcome these effects. This article provides an updated overview of research advances, as well as proposed approaches and frameworks to develop environmental flows for conserving or restoring the river sustainability. The retrospective of the environmental flow concept displays how it is becoming increasingly comprehensive and relevant for the integrated management of water resources, until reaching the proposal to consider different governance frameworks. The identification of strengths and weaknesses in the recent experience of Spain, with updated regulations on the subject, also provides support and criteria for the debate on the hydrological regime alterations and the mode to mitigate them through appropriate environmental flows. This overview may be especially rewarding for countries in the region, where in general the development of this issue still seems emerging.
