Sumario:In the twenty-first century, natural disasters and climate change are the factors that cause the greatest number of displaced people at a global level, registering as new threats to the enjoyment of human rights. In this context, the concept of "environmental migration" covers both those who move within the territorial limits of their country and those who cross the border of a State seeking international protection. However, while mechanisms have been put in place at the international level to protect the internally displaced because of environmental reasons, the so-called "climate refugees" have not. Hence, the objective of this work will be, on the one hand, to examine the difficulties and the challenges to establish a universal definition for people who are forced to leave their country of origin or habitual residence due to natural disasters and climate change, and on the other, the proposals that have emerged in order to overcome this legal vacuum.
