Sumario:The implementation of Sexual and Reproductive rights (SSR) still faces systematic barriers worldwide. A recurrent obstacle identified by recent studies is the use of conscientious objection (CO) by healthcare professionals to restrict access to SSR. That is, the use of the individual privilege to be exempted from the legal duty to perform a SRHP based on religious or moral beliefs that represent a conflict with the legal obligation to provide access to healthcare, e.g. abortion, In Vitro Fertilization, emergency contraception or transgender assistance. This chapter explores a set of national regulations on CO across the western world from a comparative perspective in order to tackle the insidious effects of the institution's misuse. The study presents an analytical distinction of the main legal features of regulations deployed to address CO in 53 countries. The first section portrays a range of scholarly and regulatory perspectives on this complex phenomenon. The second section analytically distinguishes the main characteristics of CO regulations within the selected samples. By way of conclusion, the chapter reflects on the importance of having empirical evidence to develop public policy strategies related to OC in the context of healthcare, which are aligned with local realities.
