| Sumario: | We have previously demonstrated that zinc deficiency during early stages of life programs cardiac and renal alterations. In this work, we evaluated whether moderate zinc deficiency during prenatal and postnatal growth induces vascular and metabolic alterations that would increase cardiovascular risk in adult rats of both sexes. Zinc deficiency during intrauterine development and lactation programmed an endothelial dysfunction in rats of both sexes, characterized by a lower activity of the nitric oxide system and a reduced endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)dependent vasodilatory response in the aorta. Adult male rats were more sensitive to the effects of zinc deficiency because they showed an increase in blood pressure, signs of vascular remodeling, and a decreased expression and activity of eNOS compared with females. In addition, zinc restriction induced an increase in glycemia, triglyceridemia and in liver and retroperitoneal adipose tissue oxidative stress only in male rats. These alterations could not be completely reversed by a control diet during post-weaning growth. This work highlights the importance of a balanced micronutrients intake during different stages of life for cardiovascular health. |
