Sumario:The vaginal microenvironment can be protected or interrupted by many factors, including contraception. \nObjectives: To evaluate the influence of contraception on basic vaginal states (BVSs), identify vaginal cultivable lactobacilli species, relate BVSs with cervical cytology and perform an epidemiological survey.\nMethods: 215 women were tested for vaginal content (VC) at the beginning of the contraceptive method, at three and six months. Lactobacilli species were characterized by phenotypic and genotypic tests. The following contraceptive methods were evaluated: combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP), intrauterine device (IUD), condom (CON), rhythm method (RHYT), and simultaneous dual protection (COCP+CON). McNemar's statistical test was applied.\nResults:the COCPs converted and corrected altered BVSs, the condom increased the BVSs with vaginal inflammatory reaction (VIR) and the RHYT did not modify the initial BVSs. MALDI-TOF MS analysis showed 100% concordant results with genotypic characterization.L. crispatus and L. gasseriwere the predominant species.A trend toward a positive association between L. crispatus and COCP was observed. L. murinus was for the first time isolated from the vagina.\nConclusions: Hormone administration corrected alterations. The CON, as an external contact factor, increased VIR. The trend toward a positive association between COCP and L. crispatus, with its protective properties, evidenced an effective hormonal relationship.\nThe finding of L. murinus may reflect the relationship between species and geographical locations.
