Sumario:Catalogs have evolved over time not only in their physical aspect,but also the conception of what their functions must be. Several statements oncatalog objectives have been the basis for the writing of cataloging principlesor cataloging codes. This article reviews the statements on catalogs objectivesproduced from the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st in order to comparetheir characteristics and observe their evolution.
