Sumario:After reviewing the most important features of the notion of “philosophy” in the Platonic and Aristotelian tradition, the aim is to situate Pico della Mirandola’s thought in relation to these two main lines. Then to point out the place he assigns to philosophy –as a preliminary stage to theology and religion– in the Platonic ascension of the soul. It is then shown that Pico’s concept of “philosophy” belongs to the classical Platonic tradition, unlike what happened before with the authors of the Scholastics. Finally, the author presents a personal interpretation of the use of this traditional concept as Pico della Mirandola’s response to the problems of his time.
