Sumario:This article addresses credit relations between family farmers of the community of São Lourenço, in Nova Friburgo – RJ. These relations, which often replace institutional loans, are established without any kind of formalization or legal contract, and are based in values and moralities that differ from those related to positive law and the economic system. I present a discussion about two moralities that are present at the same time in these relations: the morality represented as local, related directly to the people involved in the relation based on particular and personal codes, and the morality related to the logic of positive law and the economic system, associated to the promotion of the egalitarian principles of an individualistic ideology, based in impersonal and particular rules. I also analyze how relations apparently not oriented by economic values allow the farmers to become competitive in the market.
