Sumario:The article identifies and characterizes CONICET libraries as specialized information units, which have adapted themselves in order to face new challenges. The exploratory-descriptive research was undertaken in the context of the Federated Network of Information Resources (ReFeRI), and begins with an analysis of the institution’s organizational structure and its history. It was carried out in 55 special libraries and developed in two stages: "Identification" and "Survey". Results show that 40% of the libraries from the sample provides services in line with the new challenges. The research benefited from the gathering of a great variety of data, which is hereby presented. This data include: Thematic specialization of the units of information and their distribution; related services and activities; number of members of staff, and their competencies and specific skills. We hope that these results, the first of many to come, will be useful for future research and for the design of information policies in CONICET libraries.
