The research was structured around the analysis of a judicial trial. This led, on the one hand, to the question about what these documents say and which are the possibilities that anthropology offer for its analysis. The research implied, at the same time, the carrying out of interviews to the social actors that officiated as witnesses and protagonists of the story recounted. T hus, written records and testimonies of the period were available for carrying out this research work, both elements that constitute an important part of the fieldwork on the specific area of the penal justice in the 1970s. En este artículo se plantean algunos problemas metodológicos que surgieron en el desarrollo de mi tesis doctoral en la que realizo una etnografía sobre prácticas y procedimientos de la justicia penal durante la última dictadura militar en la Argentina. La investigación se estructuró en torno al análisis de una causa judicial, lo cual condujo, por un lado, a la pregunta acerca de qué es lo que dicen estos documentos y cuáles son las posibilidades que brinda la antropología para su análisis. Asimismo, el trabajo implicó también la realización de entrevistas a los actores que oficiaron de testigos y protagonistas de la historia allí relatada. Así, para llevar a cabo esta investigación, se contó tanto con registros escritos como con testimonios vivos del período, elementos éstos que hacen a una parte importante del trabajo de campo en el ámbito específico de la justicia penal en la década del ’70. Neste artigo são apresentados alguns problemas metodológicos surgidos durante o desenvolvimento da minha tese de doutorado, consistente numa etnografia referida às práticas e procedimentos aplicados pela justiça penal durante a última ditadura militar argentina. A investigação foi estruturada em volta da análise de um processo judicial; o que levou, por um lado, a se questionar em relação aos conteúdos da documentação que ele comporta, e pelo outro, a tentar verificar as possibilidades que pode oferecer a antropologia para uma análise dessas características. Para poder efetivar o trabalho se fez necessário realizar entrevistas àquelas pessoas que oficiaram de testemunhas, e também aos próprios protagonistas da história contida no processo.
