Sumario:The increasing prevalence of public and private technical requirements for the commercialization of goods imposes challenges for Latin American firms that seek to export, with a potential impact on the region international insertion and on intra-regional trade. We conduct two case studies in Argentina in the blueberries and agricultural machinery sectors. We describe the technical requirements imposed by countries in the region and by some of the main developed countries. We also analyze the challenges firms face and the strategies they use to comply with these requirements. Finally, we discuss vacancy areas for public policy. We find that technical requirements are not an unsurmountable barrier for firms that decide to comply. Nevertheless, there is an important role for public policy facilitating that firms, particularly smaller ones, are aware of and can comply with the requirements effectively and inexpensively.
