This work describes the different dimensions of the origin and development of this discipline in Argentina, the cognitive condition of the field in 1983 and, briefly, its development until today, its institutional dimension, the existence of other research traditions and certain social dimensions which, we believe, are the basis for the success of this scientific discipline. La antropología forense ha tenido en la Argentina un éxito científico fuera de lo común. Por un lado, esta disciplina se ha desarrollado muy bien en escasos veinticinco años generando conocimiento científicamente relevante tanto a nivel local como internacional. Por otro lado, y a diferencia de lo que ocurre con gran parte del conocimiento científico generado en contextos periféricos, tiene importantes aplicaciones sociales. En este trabajo describiremos las diferentes dimensiones del origen y desarrollo de esta disciplina en la Argentina, el estado cognitivo de esa ciencia en 1983 y, más brevemente, su desarrollo hasta el presente, su dimensión institucional, la existencia de otras tradiciones de investigación y algunas dimensiones sociales que, creemos, están en la base del éxito de esta disciplina científica. A antropologia forense na Argentina teve um sucesso científico incomum. Por um lado, esta disciplina se desenvolveu muito em apenas 25 anos de geração de conhecimento cientificamente relevante tanto a nível local quanto internacional. Além disso, ao contrário do que acontece com grande parte do conhecimento científico gerado em contextos periféricos, apresenta aplicações sociais importantes. Neste artigo descrevemos as diferentes dimensões da origem e desenvolvimento desta disciplina na Argentina.
