Sumario:This article proposes a description and primary interpretation of the process of deindustrialisation in the Uruguayan economy. Based on the contributions of some Marxist authors that incorporate the problem of agricultural income and the lack of monopoly theory to explain world trade (Shaik, 2006; Iñigo Carrera, 2007, 2018), a basic model is developed for a peripheral, small and open economy. The explanatory model strongly contributes to the understanding of the process and effects of Uruguayan liberalization and trade openness on the relevance and structure of the industry. At the same time, it allows explaining some elements of a new industrial landscape, characterized by an increase in the concentration and primarization of the sector, as well as by a high level of foreign ownership in large firms
