Sumario:In this article we present the modern theories that delve the sources and determinants of inequality throughout the regions, introducing the concept of regional competitiveness and its measurement. Emerging research in this area indicates that higher levels of regional competitiveness are associated with higher levels of well-being. Therefore, for a certain region it is important that competitiveness not only leads to increase the market share of a particular industry, but also increase the standard of living of the population. This should be the ultimate goal of economic policy actions.
