| Sumario: | This article analyzes moral representations of crimes against property and the ways of addressing them, focusing on notions of punishment and prevention among a group of workers in the fish-processing industry in Mar del Plata, Argentina—a sector that is key to the local economy yet marked by structural conditions of labor precariousness. Drawing on clinical interviews conducted between 2022 and 2023, it examines the proposals put forward by interviewees, with particular attention to how «threats» are constructed toward even more precarious fractions of the working class, and to what extent these conceptions challenge —or reproduce— the «punitive consensus» typical of a dominant authoritarian conception traditionally linked to the expansion of repressive policies as the main way of addressing crimes against property. This approach is contrasted with the objectives of a locally implemented security program with a preventive-community orientation, identifying tensions, convergences, and contradictions between the two. The research aims to contribute to the understanding of the «social bases» that legitimize security policies and to reflect on democratic alternatives in the field of security. |
