However, prison also refers to spaces of life and a network of relationships that occur on a daily basis and could not survive without care. Within some prisons, there are specific spaces that accommodate women prisoners with their young children. These children are the legitimate recipients of multiple forms of care, of which their mothers appear to be «collateral» beneficiaries. However, this distinction between «legitimate» and «collateral’ or «illegitimate» beneficiaries does not account for the complex relational and care dynamics in these prison spaces. Based on two ethnographic studies conducted among mothers with children in France and Argentina, the article highlights the difficulties involved in considering care as a priority for prison workers and offers an analysis of the aforementioned dynamics in terms of the specific structures and actors involved (female prisoners, prison guards, teachers, childcare professionals). Mechanisms that support different configurations of care are clarified. In the background, the article supports the idea of a potential and mutual contribution between the perspective of care and the analysis of the prison universe.  Los cuidados como «producción del vivir» y la cárcel en tanto institución de encierro punitivo aparecen como elementos antagónicos. Sin embargo, la cárcel también reenvía a espacios de vida y a un entramado de relaciones que transcurren en lo cotidiano y no podría perdurar sin que haya cuidados. Dentro de algunas prisiones, existen espacios específicos que acogen a mujeres detenidas con sus hijos pequeños. Estos son objeto legítimo de múltiples cuidados, de los cuales sus madres aparecen como beneficiarias «colaterales». Sin embargo, esa distinción entre beneficiario «legítimo» y «colateral» o «ilegítimo» no da cuenta de las dinámicas relacionales y de cuidado complejas en esos espacios penitenciarios. A partir de dos investigaciones etnográficas realizadas en sectores de madres con hijos/as en Francia y en Argentina, el artículo destaca las dificultades que implica considerar el cuidado en primer lugar para los trabajadores penitenciarios, y ofrece un análisis de las dinámicas mencionadas en función de las estructuras concretas y los actores intervinientes (mujeres detenidas, celadoras, maestras, profesionales de la infancia). Se despejan mecanismos que sostienen diferentes configuraciones de cuidados.
