Sumario:This article is divided into two parts. In the first one, he deals with establishing what would be the estimated date of writing of “El matadero”. Against the hypothesis of immediacy (that is, that Echeverría wrote this text between 1839 and 1840, shortly before going into exile and very close to the moment in which the action of the story takes place) the hypothesis of distance is supported: Based on certain data present in the text and in the press against Rosas of the late 1830s and early 1840s, it can be argued that it is very likely that «El Matadero” was written by Echeverría after the beginning of the Sitio Grande of Montevideo (whose start date is February 16, 1843). In the second part, and taking into account the hypothesis of distance, this article analyzes the relationship between “El matadero” and the Ojeada retrospectiva (which Echeverría published in Montevideo in 1846) and the key place occupied by youth at this historical and textual crossroad.
