| Sumario: | The article analyzes three generations of the Nieva y Castilla family focusing on the first born. Using a case study, on one hand, features of the process of elite construction and colonial family in Catamarca will be determined. On the other, the familiy relation to external power -economic, military and political- will be established. Third generation member Esteban de Nieva y Castilla (1669-1731) reproduced the family model accurately. Able to concentrate agreat deal of power, he was an encomendero, a powerful landholder, general and lieutenant governor of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca for over fifteen years.
