To do this, we analyze in PAHO's discourse the different conceptions of health statistics, their functions, bureaucratic structures, and how these were related to the development of statistical devices in the region. We identify two different conceptions in PAHO's discourse: a) health as a problem linked to trade regulations; and b) health as a requirement of the economic development of nations. In turn, we conclude that health statistics was a significant component of PAHO's intervention in regional health policy. El artículo reconstruye el modo en que la estadística participó en la problematización de la salud por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) entre 1923 y 1975. Para ello, analizamos en el discurso de la OPS las distintas concepciones de la estadística sanitaria, sus funciones, estructuras burocráticas, y cómo estas se relacionaron con el desarrollo de aparatos estadísticos en la región. Identificamos dos concepciones distintas en el discurso de la OPS: a) la salud como un problema ligado a las regulaciones comerciales; y b) la salud como requisito del desarrollo económico de las naciones. A su vez, concluimos que la estadística sanitaria fue un componente significativo de la intervención de la OPS en la política sanitaria regional.
