Sumario:The effect of Panax ginseng (Pg) and an internal teat sealant to prevent intramammary infections (IMI) and cure of non-aureus Staphylococcus (NAS) IMI in a selective dry cow therapy was evaluated. Experimental unit was the mammary quarter (n=140), divided into: Group 1 (G1): IIM free quarters, and Group 2 (G2): NAS positive quarters. They were divided into two subgroups and Pg + internal sealant (G1Pg+S and G2Pg+S) or internal sealant alone (G1S and G2S) was applied at drying off. Postpartum milk samples were taken from all quarters and examined microbiologically. No statistical associations were found between drying-off and postpartum period regardless of the treatment received (P=0.442). Analysis of new IIMs at postpartum, shown similar results for both groups (P=0.397), obtaining values of 25.8 and 19 % of quarters with new IMI for G1Pg+S and G1 S, respectively. Analysis of new IIMs by NAS, shown 75% of cures in the G2Pg+S and G2S quarters (P=0.999). The effect of Pg+S treatment to cure IMI by NAS at drying-off was similar to the internal sealant treatment alone.
