Sumario:The objective of the study was to determine whether the periodicity of the parliamentary term in South America coincides with the budgetary period for the approval of public policies and their subsequent implementation. The design of the study was retrospective, as it was based on the use of secondary data, and used the documentary review technique. It was found that most countries in South America have parliaments whose presidencies and boards of directors last only one year. Likewise, the budgetary exercise of parliaments, for the presidency and executive boards in all the cases studied, corresponds to only one year, and begins on January 1 and ends on December 31, so there is a mismatch with the period in which these parliamentary bodies begin their functions, resulting in a limitation in the exercise of their functions.
