| Sumario: | Tonality is a key musicological concept. Accordingly, a critical question in music research is: what does tonality mean? Moreover, the question may be: how did the concept of tonality evolve over time? This question was addressed here. Specifically, terminology and content analysis techniques were used to infer the way in which tonality has been conceived since the first available linguistic record of the term, to present. The selected sources were Choron (1810), Fétis (1867), Schenker (1906), Schönberg (1922), Piston (1959), and also a series of definitions given by members of our academic communities. The conceptual components of tonality found across texts were categorized as perceptual, cognitive, affective, executive, and/or linguistic. Results suggest a bias in tonality’s concept retrieval, in favour of its perceptual and cognitive components. |
