Sumario:Signifiers like «Europe» and «European» are frequently used as meaningful categories for personal and collective identification. However, they refer to a unit of meaning – «Europe»– whose extension and boundaries are neither geographically nor culturally clear. From a semiotic perspective, this article discuses the construction of how the ideasthese signifiers refer to have been discursively articulated froman Other. The discussion is illustrated with the example of La Plata River, a signifier that also refers to a unit of meaning anchored on a specific geographical region whose socio-cultural features resemble those of the Southern European countries. As it is argued, these cultural similarities pose a conceptual challenge to the semiotic processes of exclusion, differentiation and alterity that characterize every identity construction.
