Appealing to Genette ́s categories, we formulate a possible division between two overlapping levels of intimacy: that of textuality and that of transtextuality. Regarding the first level, we argue that the author creates the atmosphere of intrinsic intimacy of the novel, relying on the use of three resources: metaphor, image and reticence. Regarding the second one, we assume that Romano builds an atmosphere of intimacy with the reader through use of the allusion technique, inducing the discovery of various concomitances with other texts and authors exogenous to the Italian space, and thus suggesting possible relocations of the work in the field of universal literature Comenzamos el análisis de la novela La penumbra que hemos atravesado planteando una cuestión general (cómo el espacio geográfico-cultural original puede ser determinante en la expresión literaria de un autor) y poniendo en relieve una metodología autoral (cómo Lalla Romano convierte los mecanismos de la memoria en procedimientos literarios, contribuyendo así a la construcción de una memoria colectiva). En un segundo momento desarrollamos la hipótesis central: sostenemos que la novela se asienta específicamente sobre una atmósfera de intimidad. Apelando a categorías de Genette, formulamos una posible división entre dos planos de intimidad superpuestos: el de la textualidad y el de la transtextualidad. En relación con el primero, sostenemos que la autora crea la atmósfera de intimidad intrínseca de la novela apoyándose en el empleo de tres recursos: la metáfora, la imagen y la reticencia. En cuanto al segundo plano, entendemos que Romano construye una atmosfera de intimidad con el lector a través del uso de la técnica de la alusión, induciendo al descubrimiento de diversas concomitancias con otros textos y autores exógenos al espacio italiano, y sugiriendo de este modo posibles reubicaciones de la obra en el campo de la literatura universal.
