In this article, we propose to reflect on the conception of modern “State”, taking as for start point the work of Max Weber to address some contemporary theoretical proposals that have updated, problematized and/or added some fundamental dimension to its study. To do this, first, we reconstruct some of the most important definitions in this regard, which we find scattered in several passages of the vast work of the German thinker. Next, we incorporate into the analysis a series of theoretical proposals that are inscribed (in certain ways which we will try to clarify) in the tradition that Weber was able to inaugurate more than a century ago. We refer to the work of Charles Tilly, Michael Mann, Theda Skocpol and Pierre Bourdieu. In their work, the focus is placed mainly on the degree of autonomy that the modern State presents with respect to other dimensions or spheres of civil society and its intervention in the territory throughout history, as well as on the symbolic dimension of the domination exercised by the State and its bureaucracy. Finally, we offer some comparative conclusions in which we present the main lines in which these theoretical proposals approach of distance from the ideas from Weber, our author-proposal who served as a starting point for our reflection. If the exercise is satisfactory, we trust that this work can become a contribution both to the debate around the meanings of a polysemic and polymorphic concept such as the “State” and, at the same time, to the (re)updating of the thought of one of the “founding fathers” of the social sciences. |

En este artículo nos proponemos reflexionar acerca de la concepción de “Estado” moderno, tomando como punto de partida la obra de Max Weber para, a partir de allí, abordar algunas propuestas teóricas contemporáneas que han actualizado, problematizado y/o añadido alguna dimensión fundamental a su estudio. Para ello, primero, reconstruimos algunas de las definiciones más importantes al respecto, que encontramos desperdigadas en diversos pasajes de la vasta obra del pensador alemán. A continuación, incorporamos al análisis una serie de propuestas teóricas que se inscriben (de maneras que intentaremos precisar) en la tradición que supo inaugurar Weber hace ya más de un siglo. Nos referimos a los trabajos de Charles Tilly, Michael Mann, Theda Skocpol y Pierre Bourdieu. En ellos, el foco está puesto principalmente en el grado de autonomía que el Estado presenta respecto de otras dimensiones o esferas de la sociedad civil y su intervención en el territorio a lo largo de la Historia, así como en la dimensión simbólica de la dominación ejercida por el Estado y su burocracia. Finalmente, volviendo sobre nuestros pasos, ofrecemos unas conclusiones comparativas en donde presentamos a modo de síntesis las principales líneas que unen y distancian a estas propuestas teóricas con las de Weber, nuestro autor-propuesta que ejerció de punto de partida de nuestra reflexión. Si el ejercicio resulta satisfactorio, confiamos en que este trabajo pueda convertirse en una contribución tanto al debate en torno a los sentidos de un concepto polisémico y polimorfo como el de Estado como, al mismo tiempo, a la (re)actualización del pensamiento de uno de los “padres fundadores” de las ciencias sociales.
