In the first one, he gives an account of what he calls the “circle of interdependencies” between the data, the evidence and the ideas that are used when carrying out research in social sciences. For the author, this circle constitutes the core of the scientific knowledge. In the second part of the book, he seeks to specify how errors enter into various forms of organizational division of research: in the national census, in institutions with public officials, in surveys with temporary workers and in academic projects with chief researchers and their assistants. Becker urges not to avoid or naturalize errors and, if they cannot be resolved, turn them into a matter of inquiry. El libro de Howard Becker se divide en dos partes. En la primera, da cuenta de lo que denomina el “círculo de interdependencias” entre los datos, las pruebas y las ideas que se emplean a la hora de llevar adelante una investigación en ciencias sociales. Para el autor, este círculo constituye el núcleo del conocimiento científico. En la segunda parte del libro, busca precisar cómo ingresan los errores en diversas formas de división organizacional de la investigación: en el censo nacional, en las instituciones con funcionarios públicos, en las encuestas con trabajadores temporarios y en los proyectos académicos con investigadores en jefe y sus asistentes. Becker insta a no eludir ni naturalizar los errores y, en caso de que no se puedan resolver, convertirlos en tema de indagación.
