Sumario:This paper proposes to evaluate the innovative performance towards sustainability of rural firms in the semi-arid Southwest of Buenos Aires, as a result of the learning generated in rural extension activities promoted by the Bahía Blanca-EEA Bordenave Extension Agency of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology, under the theoretical perspective of sociotechnical transitions towards sustainability. The MESMIS methodology was used to assess, through indicators, the progress towards a high-tech production system under a socially responsible business management model. Based on a previous calibration in ten farms, which included Demonstration Units, an evaluation instrument adapted to local agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions was generated, prioritising indicators that could be easily collected and analysed in extension visits, and which were also understandable to the producer. In this study, seventeen farms were surveyed during extension activities and classified according to their proactive, adaptive, vulnerable and highly vulnerable behaviour, resulting in a homogeneous distribution. The proactive group performed better on all sustainability attributes. The characterisation allowed identifying weaknesses and strengths of each group and recognising the role of the extensionist as an external facilitator to plan adjustments that promote advances in the technological pathway with a sustainable vision.
