Sumario:1. A case of probable genetic polymorphism in populations of Bufo arenarum from Argentine is described. A phenotypic frequency of 70% of the “Ascaphus” reflex (hypnotic or defense reflex) was stated in the populations of toads from the xeric area of Mendoza. A lower phenotypic frequency of yellow spotted specimens in the same populations was observed. These characters are not present in the Northern and central Argentine populations of this species. 2. The probable factors responsible for the geographic isolation of the Argentine allopatric and sympatric species of the Leptodactylus ocellatus complex are analyzed.
