Sumario:In the field of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), the interoperability is seen as a problem associated with the formalization of the geographic concepts in the digital systems, facing semantic problems derivatives of the use of different models of data. Thus, one of the main features of the next generation of GIS will be to share information from different sources. For this, is necessary to incorporate to the GIS the philosophy of open systems. Otherwise, nowadays is widely accepted that the hypermedia functionalities can to play a very important role as underlying component (linking/relationship) in an information system. Systems as the WWW (World Wide Web) have illustrated as the global access to the information is crucial. For many, the WWW was the way through which was introduced the concept of Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS), demonstrating its potential to supply a paradigm integrated and unified of organization of the information.. Thus, leading in consideration the problem of interoperability and integration of GIS, and the features and functionalities offered for the Open Hypermedia Systems, in this paper is to present OHGIS (Open Hypermedia Geographical Information System), an alternative architecture for GIS, using the OHS filosofy as central paradigm for the definition of this architecture.
