| Sumario: | An analysis of the Schwinger term is carried out through the extensive application of the nu -dimensional regularization scheme and a systematic use of distribution theory. It is shown that the extension of some aspects of quantum field theory to a space of continuous dimensionality gives rise to a rather formal but operative machinery from which the Schwinger term comes out naturally. As a by-product, it is also shown that the result obtained for this term depends, for arbitrary nu , upon the particular definition of the equal-time commutator between two field operators chosen as the starting point.
