Sumario:Lung and tracheal samples from 40-day-old and 46-day-old broiler flocks with severe respiratory clinical signs, facial edema and mortality were subjected to bacteriological, histopathological and molecular studies. At field necropsy, both cases showed lesions compatible with pneumonia. Small, greyish colonies similar to Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale with an intense β-hemolytic activity were isolated in both cases. These isolates were identified as Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Histopathology of lungs revealed fibrino-heterophilic pneumonia. The isolation and identification of O. rhinotracheale strains with β-hemolytic activity associated with pneumonia in broiler chickens is reported for the first time in Latin America.
