Sumario:In campaigns of environmental education, as well as in programs of prevention of diseases and health promotion, the success of the initiative depends on the effectiveness of communication. The language used should be easily understood, allowing direct communication. To attract attention and arouse people's involvement, the form of presentation should also be attractive. In this context, the format of the so-called colportage (cordel) literature can be exploited. The meter, rhythm, rhymes and the fact of being read aloud (or sung) naturally contribute to the setting of the topics covered. In this paper, we present cordel pamphlets developed at the University of Vale do Paraiba from strategic issues, both in actions of health promotion (as in the leaflet "O Dentista Repentista") and in environmental awareness (case of the leaflet "Plantação de Passarinhos").
