Sumario:This article focuses on the study of four agribusinesses: Ingenio Taboga, Azucarera El Viejo, Ingenio El Palmar and Central Azucarera Tempisque SA (CATSA). Two main phases are analyzed in the development of these companies. The first phase (1970-1985) focused on technological modernization in a context of aggressive appropriation of land and water resources, coupled with the import of industrial equipment vanguard. The second period corresponds to the period 1985-1990, in which the major sugar families managed the political hegemony within the National Liberation Party, reached the presidency of the republic -Óscar Arias Sánchez (1986-1990)-; were transformed into a kind of sacarocracia and were welcomed by other local and transnational corporate sectors.
