Sumario:Given the need to protect and preserve the historical and cultural heritage and the close relationship of these demands with the constitution of the social memory of a given location, our topic are the challenges and difficulties of small cities in consideration of their responsibilities with regard to the preservation of local cultural heritage. Assuming that municipalities must ensure the preservation of its history and take over the responsibility for the registration and preservation of assets of local interest, the work addresses the issue of urban policies for the preservation of cultural heritage, taking as reference the table legislative four small town in the interior of São Paulo State: Nova Europa, Boa Esperança do Sul, Gavião Peixoto and Trabiju.
