description We present a critical review of the neoclassical theory, both in its original formula-tion, as in its reformulation in the so-called new economy of home and the labour force. Along with discussing the validity and internal consistency of the neoclassical approach on migration, we analyze also their weaknesses for the understanding of migration in the current historical context, from two perspectives. On the one hand, we question the validity of the principle of economic rationality. In neoclassical theory this principle has more a function of general axiom (not subject to demonstration) to the of a theoretical concept, that is, a principle that can be neither proved nor empiri-cally refuted. This makes the neoclassical theory in one metaphysical discourse rather than a scientific theory. On the other hand, the neoclassical theory faces an intrinsic difficulty to incorporate the historical dimension in their formulations and analysis models of the processes that are theorizing. For example, this approach argues that living conditions and wage disparities would be the determinant which generates mi-gration. However, not explained the genesis of these same wage disparities, nor its configuration in different historical periods and geographical spaces.
