| Sumario: | The aim of this article is to reconstruct and analyze the status of the employees of the tobacco factory in Cordoba, Veracruz, in the late 18th century and early 19th century. While existing historiography has tended to focus on bureaucratic structures in the viceregal capital and on senior management positions, I study the origin and profesional education of clerks, together with aspects such as career, income, obligations and privileges, as well as illness, old age and death of the men that worked in the factory. The essay strives to achieve a balanced discussion between the institutional and the individual, between legislation and reality. |
