| Sumario: | This article intends to reflect upon the context in which E.P. Thompson wrote his most important work, The Making of the English Working Class, whose first edition appeared in 1963. The text links Thompson’s personal experience, his political militancy and his historiographical activity. It highlights the fact that Thompson used the dialogue with contemporary workers within the adult education courses he taught, to construct the history of their formation as a social class in the 18th and 19th centuries. It also shows the reception of the book, particularly among Brazilian historians. |
