Sumario:Eduardo Torrejón Jurado asserts in this essay that "language is the basis or is at the bottom of every culture" He reflects in an interesting way on contemporary culture, and the increasingly marginal role occupied by literature. The paradox put forth by this Bolivian medical doctor and writer is that, even without language society and culture would be nonexistent. The voracious pragmatisM of our time has made mankind lose its capacity to live poetically, and has relegated the written word subordInate to the visual images which are privileged by current means of communication.
