Sumario:This article aims to understand the relationship between the gated communities and the exercise of citizenship in urban spaces. In a sociological perspective, we will analyze the effects of urban development model, particularly in relation to sociospatial segregation caused to those buildings. Attempts to address the current model of urbanization as a way to question the intensification of social inequalities and fragmentation of the cities, mainly in developing countries, confronting the emergence of gated communities with the proliferation of slums. Promoting an interdisciplinary dialogue, we seek to demonstrate that segregation caused by such urban enclave, has contributed to the degradation of public space of cities, hindering, or reconceptualizing the exercise of citizenship.
