Sumario:This article intends to describe the most relevant factors affecting the configuration the territory of the resguardo of San Carlos de Cañasgodas from late xix to early xx centuries, as this is the most important colonial entity of this sort in Antioquia. The study shows how in spite of the action/omission of the State on the indigenous’ life and territory, the influence of local powers seeking for land control, and a social context signed by ethnic segregation that justified the deprivation of their lands, the indigenous people made to keep and restore their territory based on the strength of their cultural inheritance.
