Sumario:This article studies the material conditions in which was the urban habitat of Maracaibo by the end of nineteen century and how that situation affected the everyday life of its residents. In this period the city begins to acquire an urban look but the imaginary inherited from the belonging for a long time to the Hispanic world is still present, representing a stage of contrasts between modernity and tradition. The modernity is seen in architectural works and urban services, as well as in some manifestations of the social, cultural and intellectual life. The tradition, on the other side, is present in the mentality, values and traditional customs that attempted against the politeness patterns and modern life habits which the leading sector tried to impose. The reconstruction of urban life conditions in the city of Maracaibo was made from official sources located in the Acervo Histórico del estado Zulia: travelers memories, newspapers, yearbooks, among others. This subject is treated as an expression of the regional, national and world-wide historical process
