Sumario:This article analyses, from a comparative standpoint, the conditions which facilitated the transmission of agrarian employment from generation to generation. It deals specifically with those who produced sugar cane and grains in areas of agricultural colonisation in Grecia, Puriscal and the Valley of the Saints (now the cantons of Tarrazú, Dota and León Cortés). The article covers the period from 1850, when migrants began to move out of the Central Valley, to 1950, when the frontiers of colonisation close to these areas were finally exhausted.
