| Sumario: | In this paper we intend to analyse the priests? participation in the conformationof power groups in process that took place about 1821. This process resulted in the conformation of the Province of Salta as a new political context in the north-west. The opposition to Güemes that culminated in his destitution and death, cristallized this year, and it is evident that both the elite and the clergy worked out common strategies for legitimating the political leadership of the group ?Patria Nueva?. This group wanted to give the Province new institutions according the republican principle of power division, and, above all, to contain the masses whose mobilization increased during the independence war. To this end we will consider the twofold role that the priests had in this process: as mediators between human and divine matters, thus indoctrinating the citizens-parishioners politically, and as direct participants in the political process through their intervention in the electoral processes and in the representative institutions. |
