| Sumario: | This work constitutes a first approach to the historical reconstruction of regulated female sex work in the city of San Juan (1899-1937) based on the analysis of regulations and the actions of municipal, judicial and police agencies. For this, we first analyze the legal normative set that served as the basis for the regulation of prostitution and its workers in the capital of San Juan. Then, the actions of social control agencies are investigated, not only to identify their discourses and practices, but also to highlight the multiple tensions generated by this activity, considered useful and necessary, as well as dangerous. Finally, we investigate the set of strategies deployed by these women to improve their living conditions in a context of growing urbanization and consolidation of the capitalist economy. |
