Thinking about the role of Medicine in this process during three decades in which the population of La Plata grew from 5,000 to 100,000 inhabitants, this work investigates the deployment in health care and in the formation of knowledge, on the singular support of what was understood as a “hygienic city”. El surgimiento en la Argentina finisecular de la ciudad planificada de La Plata plantea una interrelación de ese acto creador con los saberes científicos que lo generaron y que luego pasaron a integrar la propia dinámica de un núcleo urbano en constante crecimiento. Pensando al rol de la Medicina en ese proceso durante tres décadas en las que la población de La Plata pasa de 5.000 a 100.000 habitantes, se indaga el despliegue en la atención de la salud y en la formación de conocimiento, sobre el soporte singular de lo que fue entendido como una “ciudad higiénica”. O surgimento, na Argentina da virada do século, da cidade planejada de La Plata representa uma inter-relação desse ato criativo com o conhecimento científico que o gerou e que mais tarde passou a integrar a dinâmica de um centro urbano em constante crescimento. Pensando no papel da Medicina nesse processo durante três décadas em que a população de La Plata passou de 5.000 para 100.000 habitantes, investiga-se o desdobramento na atenção à saúde e na formação do conhecimento, no suporte único do que se entendia como uma “cidade higiênica”.
