| Sumario: | The Collective Pastoral of the Episcopate of Uruguay published in March 1940 operated as a strong attack to the lay school and, in turn, to the teaching profession. In this paper we will recover the prelude of that contest that also took place between writings, both in the pastorals of the Curia and in the press of the Unión Nacional del Magisterio. Analyzing these disputes will allow us to question the supposedly unforeseen nature of the attack and to recognize the political meanings that each group attached to the orientation of primary education and secularism during the confrontation. |
