Since the control of arms became control over the territory as well, the role of commanders became vitally important. Under the double dynamics that confronted subordinate cities with the capitals of the intendancies and the government of Buenos Aires, the conflicts that involved the commanders of arms and the puntano territorial corporation are evidence of the growing tension around the principle of self-government. El trabajo se centra en los comandantes de armas de la ciudad de San Luis, hasta el nombramiento de los tenientes gobernadores en el año 1812. En tanto el control de las armas devino en control del territorio, el rol de los comandantes de armas adquirió una vital importancia. Bajo la doble dinámica que enfrentó a las ciudades subalternas con las capitales de intendencia y el gobierno de Buenos Aires, los conflictos que involucraron a los comandantes de armas y al cuerpo territorial puntano dan cuenta de la creciente tensión en torno del principio de autogobierno.
