The war divided the public opinion, affected the economy and changed the Brazilian foreign policy. The German submarine warfare and the sinking of Brazilian merchant ships led to the breakup of Brazil’s relations with the German Empire, the declaration of the state of war and finally the humanitarian and military collaboration with the Entente. The end of the conflict opened a new stage during which the country joined the League of Nations anddeveloped policies of international outreach. We will investigate how the awakening of nationalism in the intellectual and political life after 1914 provided the formation of both a critical consciousness as a authoritarian right in Brazil and Argentina. Este artículo trata un conjunto de aspectos relativos al impacto de la Primera Guerra Mundial en Brasil, para luego establecer una comparación con Argentina. La guerra dividió a la opinión pública, repercutió sobre la economía y alteró la política externa brasilera. La guerra submarina alemana y el hundimiento de navíos mercantes brasileros llevarían al rompimiento de relaciones de Brasil con el Imperio Alemán, la declaración del estado de guerra y por fin la colaboración humanitaria y militar con el Entente. El fin del conflicto abrió una nueva fase en la cual el país ingresó a la Liga de las Naciones y desarrolló una política de proyección internacional. Analizaremos cómo el despertar del nacionalismo en la vida política e intelectual luego de 1914 propició tanto la formación de una conciencia crítica como de una derecha autoritaria en Brasil y en Argentina. Este artigo trata um conjunto de aspectos relativos ao impacto da Primeira Guerra Mundial no Brasil, para ao final estabelecermos uma comparação com a Argentina. A guerra dividiu a opinião pública, repercutiu sobre a economia e alterou a política externa brasileira. A guerra submarina alemã e o afundamento de navios mercantes brasileiros levaram ao o rompimento de relações do Brasil com o Império Alemão, a declaração do estado de guerra e por fim a colaboração humanitária e militar com a Entente. O fim do conflito abriu uma nova fase na qual o país ingressou na Liga das Nações e ali desenvolveu uma política de projeção internacional. Analisaremos como o despertar do nacionalismo na vida política e intelectual após 1914 propiciou tanto a formação de uma consciência crítica quanto de uma direita autoritária no Brasil e na Argentina.
