This was evidenced by the Church's active presence in the social and political spheres, underscored by the fact that patronage and other diverse ties with the state were maintained in most countries of the region. Catholicism and its Church renewed their influence among rural and urban popular sectors, as well as among political parties and leaders, to name a few examples A pesar de los complejos desafíos del siglo XIX, diversas medidas laicistas, y el impacto de la integración mundial, el catolicismo siguió siendo la confesión mayoritaria de la población de América Latina en el siglo siguiente, lo cual se evidenció en la activa presencia de la Iglesia en el campo social o político, remarcado por el hecho que en la mayor parte de los países de la región se mantuvieron los patronatos y otros variados vínculos con el Estado.
